Flying heroes on the Landiwiese.
The heroes of the skies once again transformed the Landiwiese into a unique action spectacle on the second day of freestyle.ch Zürich 2013. The unmistakable atmosphere on Lake Zurich attracted 33,000 spectators to the Landiwiese during the freestyle weekend. They celebrated the new freestyle.champs: Antoine Truchon (snowboard), Henrik Harlaut (freeski), Mathieu Rebeaud (FMX) and Anton Thelander (MTB) in glorious sunshine and an exuberant atmosphere.
This year again the Skitrax Watertrax mats were laid out in the start area. In addition, the entire 40o steep approach area was again laid out with the mats.
The freestyle family met for the 19th time on the Landiwiese in Zurich to admire a weekend of sporting action over Big Air and Dirt Jump, to meet stars of the scene up close, to go on a voyage of discovery in the Label World or to get active themselves in the Swissmilk Skate Plaza and the LAAX Urban Stairset. Just in time for the start of the contest, clouds and fog cleared over the Landiwiese and blue skies, sun and a sensational atmosphere greeted the international top riders. The 44 riders from 16 nations already dug deep into their bag of tricks in the qualifications and really fired up the audience with daring jumps. In the four big finals, the 16 riders raised the bar even higher, as everyone wanted to take home the biggest piece of the US$ 100,000 prize money pie.

In the snowboarding category, Antoine Truchon from Canada beat off strong competition with a Frontside Double Cork 1440 lean. Thrilled with his first freestyle.champ title, the 22-year-old declared, "The level in the final was really high and that makes me all the happier about the win." Also according to the snowboard judges, the level at freestyle.ch 2013 was by far the highest in the event's history. Second place went to Stale Sandbech from Norway, followed by Sage Kotsenburg from the US.
The riders on two boards also put on a great show, which was won by Sweden's Henrik Harlaut with a Nosebutter Double Cork 1260 Tail, successfully defending his last year's title. 2013 is his year, already in winter he won gold at the X-Games: "Everything is going right for me at the moment and I am over happy to have won in front of such a great crowd here." As in 2012, the 18-year-old Swiss Kai Mahler from Fischenthal was delighted with second place.
The boys' dirt jump was also spectacular. In mountain biking, the youngest rider in the starting field, 19-year-old Anton Thelander, stood at the top of the podium after two exciting runs. His combination of truckdriver, backflip tailwhip and flair impressed the most. Besides the freeSTYLER.ch title from yesterday, the Swede can now also call himself freestyle.champ 2013.
The same happened to Mathieu Rebeaud, the crossover.champ from Saturday. In the men's category with the roaring engines, the favorite from Switzerland left his competitors behind with a spectacular "flair".
Freestyle action for all at the LAAX Urban Stairset and the Swissmilk Skate Plaza
The concept of moving the mountain into the city and actively involving the freestyle.ch audience was a complete success. At the LAAX Urban Stairset, ambitious amateurs tricked over the rails. Tips were given by professionals. At the contest, in which 70 riders took part, Thomas Coldebella and Joelle Juchli won the snowboard classification. In the freeski category, Laurent De Martin, a rider from the Swiss Freeski Team, stood at the top of the podium.
All hell broke loose in the Swissmilk Skate Plaza as well. Young kids mingled with the veterans and had a lot of fun with their skateboards. Kilian Zehnder was the winner of the skate session thanks to his backside noseblunt on the transition of the Mini Hip Closed Ramp.
Zurich can be proud of freestyle.ch
The motto "It's hero time" proclaimed by freestyle.ch 2013 Zurich was spot on, because heroes in the end were everyone who witnessed and participated in the spectacle of high-flyers. With 33,000 spectators, the number of visitors exceeded the organizers' expectations. "The city of Zurich can be proud of this event," declared OC President Peter Hürlimann.
